About The Song
Ever since Kind was first released in 2023, it has stayed with me.
I still remember the moment Michael Farren shared a reel just after finishing the song with Jesse Reeves and Steve Fee. Before it was ever recorded, the weight of it was already there. It struck me. It awed me.
What moved me most was how honestly the song spoke to real life while still pointing to the kindness of God inside it. Every lyric came from lived experience, not theory. In many ways, it was this very song that gave me permission to write the songs that had been forming in me but didn’t quite have a way out yet. And when Cory Asbury recorded and released it, giving the song such depth and tenderness, that impact only deepened.
Nearly two and a half years later, Kind has never let go of me.
This recording is my attempt to honor that gift. It carries the same truths, the same pains, the same lived experiences, through my own voice and interpretation. It is a tribute to the heart and artistry of Cory Asbury, to the writers who crafted it with courage and care, and ultimately to our Heavenly Father, who has always been kind.
Lyrics
Verse 1
Sometimes marriages don’t work
Sometimes babies die
Sometimes rehab turns to relapse
And you’re left just asking why
And for all the prayers I’ve prayed
Sometimes I wonder if He’s real
And if He is how is He choosing
Who He does and doesn’t heal?
Chorus
I’ve tried to run from Jesus
I’ve started holy wars
I’ve tried the patient waiting
And the kicking down the doors
I’ve cursed His name in anger
With my fist raised to the sky
And in return all He’s ever been is kind
Verse 2
I’ve burned my share of bridges
I learned to tuck my tail and run
Watch the wreckage in the rear view
From all the crooked things I’ve done
And I know that He forgives me
But it’s hard to forgive myself
I can’t help but think that amazing grace
Is for everybody else
[Chorus]
[Interlude]
(Always kind)
Always kind, always kind
(Always kind)
Verse 3
And I know I wasn’t there
But when I look up at the cross
I see the darkest day in history
And I guess that’s what kindness cost
[Chorus]
[Outro]
(Always kind)
Always kind, always kind
(Always kind)
Need something else? Ask away!
