Matt Rees released Death Like Yours on September 26, 2026. He wrote it during one of the hardest seasons of his life, when he had more questions than answers and needed to bring them to Jesus.
The song began during a weekend away with close friends. Rees had just learned that a close friend and mentor would be leaving his church in the middle of a painful split. The news was not public yet, so he carried it quietly. He was celebrating with his friends on the outside and grieving on the inside.
Later that night, he started writing Death Like Yours. Romans 6 came to mind. The passage speaks about dying with Christ and being raised with Him, words Rees had known for years but now felt in a new way.
“If we suffer with Christ, we will also be glorified with Him. Let’s put all of our hope in Him.”

Acoustic guitar and Rees's expressive voice leave space for the questions in the song. The lyrics do not rush to an easy answer. They keep returning to one confession: all his hope is in Christ.
Rees does not compare his pain to what Jesus endured. But the experience helped him understand a little more of Christ's suffering and gave new weight to the promise of resurrection. Death Like Yours holds both the hurt of that moment and the hope he found in Jesus.
