Story Behind the Song

Behind The Song: Found In You by Josh Clay

kingdomchorus | April 2, 2026

Texas based worship artist Josh Clay has a gift for creating honest intimate songs that speak straight to the heart. His track Found In You from the 2022 EP No Chains On Me is a simple yet powerful declaration of discovering true fulfillment and freedom in Christ.

We asked Josh to share how this heartfelt song came to life.

Could you please share the personal story behind this song?

I was taking a songwriting production class by Charlie Puth. It was a cool little online course that I am sure started because of COVID when artists were trying to make extra income since they could not tour. I took a few of those classes but Charlie Puths was one of them. We were supposed to write two songs in the course of 30 days.

The prompt for one of the songs was to start with an instrument you would not normally think to use. For me I have always loved the old school 50s and 60s sounds the quartets trios and those beautiful harmonies. So I started the song with just my voice. It had that classic feel like Stand By Me or the doom doom doom you hear in Back to the Future at the school dance.

I just started singing doom doom and then picked up my guitar. That is how the song began. I still have voice memos where I was trying to figure out what I was even singing. Eventually it landed on the line I searched for what seemed like a lifetime for fortune fame bright lights all the things you think you want.

When I write about Jesus or Christian themes I often approach it like a love song. So the chorus became Everything I thought I needed I found it in You.

It is honestly one of the simplest productions I have ever made. It started as just a demo but it ended up becoming the second song I ever released right after Greater Than the Grave.

I love that song so much because it is so simple yet intimate. Even now I sometimes think about redoing it one day with a full band. But it has always had a special soft spot in my heart. I love the way it sounds and I love the way I sound on it which is not always the case with my earlier productions.

What is the takeaway message?

Found In You is a beautiful reminder that the things we chase in this world can leave us empty but everything we truly need hope healing and freedom is found in a relationship with Jesus. It is an intimate love song to the One who brings our hearts back to life.

If you have not heard Found In You yet go stream it on your favorite platform or watch the lyric video. Let the simple honest lyrics speak to your heart today.

Sometimes the simplest songs carry the deepest truths. Josh Clays Found In You is a wonderful example of how God can use an unexpected songwriting challenge to create something timeless and encouraging for the Church.
