The song story
Looking ahead to the place Jesus has prepared.
“City of Joy” takes the hope of heaven and gives it a sound a whole room can sing. From the Prestonwood Choir’s 2017 album Horizon, the song pictures the New Jerusalem: a place where God’s people are with Him and where sorrow and death are no more.
The choir’s lifted voices, a strong lead vocal and a full band give the song its joyful momentum. Its focus is not an escape from life today. It is a reminder that present suffering does not have the last word. The promises of Jesus do.
That is why the song works both as a celebration and as a comfort. It gives a congregation language for anticipation, and gives anyone walking through a hard season a reason to look forward. The refrain is simple and certain: we are bound for the City of Joy.
Inspired by the promise of a new heaven and a new earth in Revelation 21, “City of Joy” invites listeners to imagine the day they will see their Savior face to face and worship with the redeemed.
