BEHIND “GENERATIONS”
A blessing for the years ahead.
Matt Rees wrote “Generations” as a prayer for his children and the grandchildren he hopes to know one day. He wanted words he could sing over them through the days, months, and years ahead.
The song began while Matt was studying the story of King Hezekiah in 2 Kings 19–20. He was struck by the contrast between the blessings Hezekiah received in his own life and the consequences facing those who would come after him. That thought brought the question close to home: what does it mean to treasure God’s goodness today while caring for the faith of the next generation?
Matt’s answer became a prayer. He asks the Lord to keep his family rooted in love and mercy, to let his children know God’s glory, and to fill their lives with praise. The song looks past one lifetime without losing sight of the people right in front of us.
“I hope that this song will strengthen and encourage you as you listen, and cause you to look ahead to bless those who will come after you.”

Acoustic guitar and synth keys carry the song with a gentle pulse. Matt’s vocal moves from quiet reflection toward a fuller declaration, giving families and listeners a simple prayer to make their own: may the goodness of God be known from generation to generation.
