Presence Music shares Christmas hope in the midst of grief.
Featuring Joel Vaughn and Avenue Music, “The Darkness Didn’t Know” connects the manger, the cross and the empty tomb.
DULUTH, Minn. — For those entering Christmas with the absence of someone they love, the season’s message of hope can feel deeply personal. Presence Music brings that experience into “The Darkness Didn’t Know,” a new Christmas single with Joel Vaughn and Avenue Music.
Vocalist Leah Monson wrote the song just three days after losing her brother. Grief was still fresh, and the need to remember that God’s character had not changed gave the writing its direction.
“I remember feeling God’s presence really heavy in those first couple of days, like He was calling me to stand against the darkness for those who can’t.”— Leah Monson, Presence Music
Leah wanted the song to speak to people who feel that darkness has won. Co-writer Jonathan C. Smith of Avenue Music recalls questioning whether they should write a Christmas song at all in that moment. The loss became the reason to write about a hope that darkness cannot undo.
The song begins with a newborn’s cries in Bethlehem, then follows Jesus to the cross and the empty tomb. It tells the Christmas story as the beginning of a larger promise: the Child in the manger came to bring a hope that death could not take away.
For listeners carrying sorrow into the holidays, “The Darkness Didn’t Know” makes room for grief while pointing toward redemption. Leah hopes people hear that they are held in their grief and that eternal life in Christ gives them a reason for hope beyond it.
Joel Vaughn produced the recording and joins Presence Music and Avenue Music on the release. A national Christian radio campaign led by Josh Lauritch of 55 Promotion is introducing the song to stations this season. In December, Presence Music will also join Mark Schultz, Britt Nicole and Warren Peay for Christmas In The Round.
“The Darkness Didn’t Know” is available now on major streaming platforms.
