Written during the hardest year of Matt’s life, “Hard Times” emerged from a season when long-standing church relationships, community, and stability suddenly unraveled. In the midst of bewilderment and loss, Matt discovered a clearer view of Jesus than ever before. “If He hadn’t peeled apart my life, I could have never really seen His goodness toward me,” he shares. The track draws directly from Hebrews 12, embracing the Lord’s loving discipline that produces holiness and good fruit.

About Matt Rees Matt Rees is a Christian songwriter and musician from southeast Michigan. Matt grew up playing music with his family. He led worship for nearly ten years from his guitar and keyboards — writing songs collaboratively for his church — before branching out to write and record his own music.
Honest and heartfelt, his music ranges from simple folk ballads to soaring rock anthems. From quiet moments in prayer, meditation on the Psalms, and real life lived with his wife and children, Matt’s songs are written to build up the Body of Christ, teach and confess the word of Christ, and glorify God alone.
Matt plays at local churches and worship events, collaborating with other Christian independent artists like Grande Baliad, Felicity Joy, Scott DeClaire Jr., GracieEm, Paige Lee and Erica Velasquez. Matt worked with producer Jake Rye to record his Redeemer EP in 2024 and several singles including “Breaking” and “Hope Eternal.” Recently Matt finished recording a full-length Christian folk and singer-songwriter album, set to release in 2026.
