Jonathan Duff Shares the Story Behind “Life Was Changed”
There are moments when God does more than improve the life we already have. He calls us out of the grave and gives us an entirely new one.
That is the heart behind Jonathan Duff’s song, “Life Was Changed.”
Released on July 10, 2026, “Life Was Changed” is a joyful Christian folk-pop song built around redemption, new life, and the moment everything changes through Jesus. With acoustic guitar, mandolin, warm vocals, driving percussion, and an upbeat summer feel, the song carries a simple Gospel message that is easy to sing along with and hard to miss.
Called Out of the Grave
Jonathan wrote “Life Was Changed” as a personal reflection on the story of Lazarus.
In John 11, Lazarus had been dead and buried when Jesus stood outside the tomb and called him by name. At the sound of Christ’s voice, Lazarus walked out of the grave.
Jonathan saw a picture of his own spiritual journey in that story.
Before encountering the life and grace of Jesus, he felt spiritually dead and bound by shame. Christ did not simply help him become a better version of himself. He called him out of death and into an entirely new life.
That truth comes through clearly in the opening verse:
“I was dead and buried
Till You rolled that stone from my grave.”
The song connects Lazarus’ physical resurrection with the spiritual resurrection offered through Christ. It is about being set free, leaving shame behind, and discovering that death no longer has the final word.
A Simple Message of Redemption
Jonathan intentionally kept the message straightforward.
After years of writing and releasing worship music, he wanted to explore Christian folk music that could carry the truth of the Gospel beyond traditional worship settings. His hope was to write something that could play in a coffee shop, public space, summer playlist, or road-trip mix while still pointing listeners toward Jesus.
The chorus keeps that message simple:
“My life was changed
You offered me redemption.”
There is no complicated explanation. Jesus offered redemption, healed a broken heart, and called someone out of the grave.
The bridge goes even deeper by making it clear that this change was not the result of human effort:
“It wasn’t my own power
It wasn’t my strength.”
The song points instead to the scars Jesus bore, the price He paid, and the grace that makes new life possible.
Christian Music With a Summer Feel
Jonathan also believes Christian music should make room for joy.
Not every faith-based song has to feel heavy or quiet. Sometimes the right response to redemption is celebration.
“Life Was Changed” carries that spirit through its acoustic guitar, mandolin, piano, drums, bass, and electric lead guitar. The production gives the song a bright, windows-down quality that feels made for summer drives, outdoor gatherings, and moments when listeners simply want to celebrate what God has done.
The sound draws from Christian folk-pop, acoustic CCM, and roots-inspired pop, with similarities to the uplifting energy of Josiah Queen, Brandon Lake, Jordan St. Cyr, and Tyler Philip Ratcliffe.
It is joyful without losing the weight of its message.
A New Direction for Jonathan Duff
Jonathan Duff is a singer, songwriter, and worship leader based in Carlsbad, California. He has served in worship ministry for more than a decade, writing songs with the goal of helping people encounter Christ in an honest and meaningful way.
While worship remains central to his ministry, Jonathan has recently begun moving into Christian folk music alongside friends and fellow Christian artists. The goal is not to leave worship behind, but to carry the Gospel into sounds and spaces that may reach listeners outside the usual Christian music audience.
“Life Was Changed” is an important step in that direction.
It brings together Jonathan’s worship background, his love for Scripture, and a warm folk-pop sound that feels natural, accessible, and full of life.
A Song for Anyone Who Has Been Made New

At its core, “Life Was Changed” is a testimony.
It is for anyone who remembers who they were before Jesus met them. It is for anyone who has carried shame, felt spiritually lost, or wondered whether their heart could really be restored.
The song answers that question with celebration:
Jesus still calls people out of graves.
He still heals hearts.
He still redeems what seemed beyond saving.
And when He does, life is never the same.
